Ten years ago it was ufotable’s UBW; fifteen years ago ufotable’s Zero. I didn’t know the first; the second felt mainstream enough to break out a little (Zero wasn’t as “maximum otaku” as UBW). While Zero was hot we got ufotable UBW; while UBW was hot we got Fate/Grand Order (the mobile game, sometimes nicknamed “Fatego”).

Fate/stay night is a 2004 visual novel (18+; the later PS2 / PS Vita all-ages voiced release is called Réalta Nua to distinguish it from the original). Three routes—Fate, Unlimited Blade Works (UBW), Heaven’s Feel (HF)—must be played in order except for the prologue; the stories diverge completely. “UBW in the middle” means FSN’s UBW route.

The Fate route has only one anime adaptation: Studio DEEN’s 2006 TV series, which mysteriously mixes in bits of UBW mid-run.

UBW was animated twice: DEEN’s movie (what people call “DEEN UBW”), and ufotable’s 24+1+short-OVA TV run in 2014 (“ufotable UBW”).

HF got ufotable’s movie trilogy—finished airing.

Fate/hollow ataraxia is a sequel(?) VN to FSN—no anime; not sure about manga.

Fate/Zero is a prequel—originally a Urobuchi fanfic that went official. Novel first; one TV adaptation, ufotable.
